General

What does IPS stand for?

Internet Protocol Server

What is IP telephony?

In simple terms, IP telephony is the migration of voice and data technology through a single medium.

What will IP do for me?

Adopting IP telephony ensures your business is ready to deploy enhancements to system applications as they become available. The upgrade enables:
  • Retention of current features and operation, removing any impact to the business or user
  • The user to add business-enhancing features with minimal delay, immediately increasing business revenue
  • Businesses to interconnect sites to share common applications, such as voicemail and interstate calls, using the existing data network
  • Allows self-administration of handsets including feature key programming and name display changes
  • Lets businesses take advantage of carrier services offers

Are there any new features available with the IPS?

Upgrading your system to an IPS model will give you access to a range of new features including:
  • Web based self-management, including a drag and drop feature for key programming changes, change name and PABX time displays
  • Call log, giving you access to the last twenty incoming call numbers on the screen of your digital terminal
  • New digital terminals with an inbuilt directory facility

How does IPS differ from my existing system?

The IPS will differ from your existing system in the following ways:
  • Supports the new Dterm 85 Series i handsets
  • Provides IP telephony via IP terminals and IP inter-site networking; a single site “look and feel“ with full feature transparency
  • Supports softphones that run through laptop computers or PCs
  • Supports more efficient use of card slots  (increased extensions and lines to ISDN and PSTN)
  • Provides new enhanced features
  • Supports new self-management tools to programme and maintain the system
  • Supports new applications such as multimedia contact centres and unified messaging

Will upgrading our PABX cause any interruptions to our business?

Upgrades to your system will occur at a time most convenient to you. CCT will coordinate a time with you during business hours and usually carry out upgrades after hours to minimise any effect on your business.

Sales

How will IP impact on my business?

IP is the technology vehicle being developed by telephony vendors and you will soon see carriers offering IP connectivity. By upgrading to this technology you can take advantage of tariff and infrastructure discounts provided by carriers.

What advantage will an upgrade provide to my existing system?

One of the biggest benefits IPS offers is protection of your investment.

It provides long-term migration capability, to ensure your system grows along with your business. Whether you require short-term fixes or longer-term reorganisations, the IPS can adapt to your business with minimal cost and effort.

Technical

Can I upgrade my current PABX without IP functionality?

Yes, you can upgrade to IPS without IP technology and take advantage of the new features provided on the PABX itself.

Will I be able to use IP straight away?

The IPS system is ready to support IP handsets to your desktop. It is recommended that NEC check the data infrastructure (switches and routers) to establish its suitability to deploy IP handsets and IP networking.

If I upgrade my PABX to IP will my current handset still work?

Yes, in most instances you will be able to use your current handsets, although you may not have access to all of the features provided with the upgrade. You can also purchase IP handset adaptors for some digital handsets to provide access to these features.

There are also a number of new digital IP handsets and softphone options to choose from.

Can I still use my peripheral equipment supplied by NEC?

Yes, in most instances. Consult your systems engineer for specific equipment supported.

Can I still use my peripheral equipment not supplied by NEC?

Yes, in most instances NEC is vendor compatible. Consult your systems engineer for specific equipment supported.

After I upgrade can I network multiple sites?

Yes, in most instances, however this feature will depend on your current data infrastructure (switches and routers).

What is an IP pad?

When an IP pad card is inserted into the IPS it acts as a translator between existing telephony equipment and data telephony. This allows your system to support IP upgrades and existing digital and analogue handsets.

What happens to my telephones if the data network goes down?

Phones connected to the data network are affected by network issues. If you are using IP handsets your telephone will indicate on your digital display “network is busy”.

If your PABX has a remote site linked the remote site will automatically be redirected to the traditional telephony network mode (PSTN lines etc) with no business impact at all.

Do I have to do anything to my data network to enable IP?

The data equipment needs to support QoS (Quality of Service). This feature allows the data network to treat voice with a high priority ensuring voice quality. QoS also helps data equipment handle voice more efficiently.

Layer 2 switches are required as hubs are not suitable. Routers need to support the QoS features. CCT can provide guidance to ensure you have the right data equipment.

Will my IP handset work from home?

Your handset will work using any data connection to your core telephony system, provided the network equipment supports the QoS features and bandwidth necessary for quality voice transmission.

What is included in an IPS purchase?

Your system is available in two distinct formats. You can either purchase the system so that it is IP ready and includes software and hardware to provide an IPS platform to deploy new features as they become available.

Alternatively, you can purchase a platform with IP telephony provided, with all software and hardware required to enable the IPS platform to provide IP Telephony on day 1. Terminals and data equipment are not included.

Our current system is nearing capacity. Will the IPS do anything to help?

The IPS system can provide you with greater capacity than your existing system. Small systems can currently grow to maximum of 100 to 250 stations. This is brand and system-dependent, while the IPS can grow from 100 stations to 650 stations or more dependent on configuration.

The IPS also offers the ability to grow via virtual (software only expansion) PIMS, requiring minimal hardware and therefore a significant cost saving.

Do I need new carrier services?

No the existing services will operate on the IPS as they were provided on the existing platform. The new IPS platform can provide all available carrier services.

How long will the upgrade last?

Despite technology’s rapid advancements the system will support the new features and applications and terminals for three to five years. Upgrades to software and hardware are available and might be required to support the systems features and functionality enhancements.

Configuration

Are there any additional infrastructure costs?

Generally there would be no additional infrastructure costs during installation of the IPS.

To ensure your system can cope with any installation we recommend that you consult with CCT to assess the data environment (switches and routers).

Will I need to retrain my staff?

Since the IPS is based on the same feature sets available on your existing system there’s no need to retrain your staff. You will receive a comprehensive guide to explain new features.

System administration training can be provided for those who wish to do in-house moves and changes via the self management web based or windows GUI interface.

Security

Are there any security issues with IP telephony?

IP telephony is password protected. Each user must login to access the system. Password protection provides protection against network theft. Normal levels of security are maintained and we recommend consultation with an CCTconsultant to ensure your business is secure.
